There's the old line about the Middle East that we should stay out
because "those people have been fighting each other forever" and our
involvement won't stop that from continuing. But the people of the
Middle East have nothing on Europe. There has been large scale
warfare there from the begining of recorded history. They have
fought over everything there is to fight over: power, land,
religion, trade, race/ethnicity, kinship, economic ideology,
political ideology, personal insults, even women (if Homer is to be
believed).
And they have historically shown little aversion to living under
authoritarian rule. Indeed, it has historically been embraced. It's
like what Churchill said about the Germans-they are always either at
your heel or at your throat.
The U.S. military has helped bail "democratic" Europe out 3 times in
the last century. But at this point, NATO is a farce. If the
democratic peoples of Europe can't be bothered to defend themselves
(and if you look at there defense spending, they can't), why should
the U.S. be?
