...but I doubt our politicians and the general population have the
nerve to fight another European war. Over the past two decades, we
have become more and more like Europe in that we would rather sit down
and talk out our problems and offer appeasement to nations that have
some semblance of military power rather than standing up to them,
drawing a line and telling them not to cross it. I don't necessarily
think this is a Republican or Democrat thing. It's not a conservative
or liberal thing. It's just the way our society has moved. Things
now are far, far different than what they were in the 1940s when Pearl
Harbor was the straw that broke the camel's back and we jumped in the
fray with both guns blazing. Things are far different today than they
were in the 1980s when we dared Moscow to make a move; they knew what
would happen to them if they pushed us too much...and they eventually
cracked under the pressure. We couldn't do that today. We'd have too
many people claiming we were provoking the Russians and baiting them
into war and there would be an outcry about the "warmongering US"
always itching for a fight. As I said, I have no doubt that our
military could handle it...and they'd do their job with flying colors
as they always do...but our politicians can't handle it. Neither can
we as Americans.
I fear we've become too soft...too interested in what Britney and
Paris are doing and too enthralled with arguing with each other rather
than coming together for a common goal. After all, nationalism and
national pride are bad words these days. How can we expect to rally
together for a common cause if we can't even agree that being proud to
be an American is a good thing?
