If the Soviets invaded a country with a Democratically elected
government, the US would have moved troops and tanks and aircraft
carriers immediately. They probably wouldn't have moved them to
confront the Soviets directly, but there would be a tactical strategy
that would be put in motion whose meanings were known by
all...including the Soviets. That alone was usually enough to
dissuade the Soviets from doing anything else.
Today, the Russians invade a country with a democratically elected
government and we wag our fingers and join with the French in saying
(in essence), "Oooh...you bad, mean old Russians! You better not do
that or we'll...we'll...we'll kick you out of the G8 is what we'll do!
Yeah! That's what we'll do if you don't stop being mean."
