Heck, in the last 20 years, we've either bombed, invaded or sent
troops to: Panama, Kuwait, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq,
Afghanistan...These have occurred in Dem and Pub administrations.
All of this has gone on while we've kept troops in Japan, Germany
and Korea.
That's 8 military excursions in the last 20 years, and for the most
part, the people supported these excursions. Only after Iraq became
a quagmire did support for the war wane.
I think we're less and less like Europe, as they've moved more and
more to pacifism.
You mentioned Pearl Harbor. Well, I'd say we've definitely had a
strong military response to this generation's Pearl Harbor (911).
As for the 80's, Reagan confronted the Soviets. But he wasn't
stupid. He swatted flies (Grenada, dropping a few bombs on Libya).
He talked tough, and he put missiles in Europe. But he didn't want
an actual war with the USSR...That was one of the genius things
about Reagan. He sounded like a tough guy. But he was a pragmatist.
